Soul Food : The Extra Mile

As a child of God, a Christian as we are called, have you ever asked yourself what, "what differentiates me from the others?" A pretty legit question don't you think. What differentiates us from the World? What makes us stand out? But, that's the problem these days with most "Christians", we pretty much just blend in, camouflage & silently go with the flow - unseen, unheard, unnoticed. Well, think about this : who has ever made a difference unseen, unheard or unnoticed. Truth is, for a change to come, it has to be manifested. Where is our manifestation [Romans 8 : 19]? THe amazing is, we are different & we have the power to change the world because we have Christ in us. How can we carry something great and still manage to go unnoticed. Most of the time we let routine, values, lust & desires of this passing world define us thus making it impossible to shine. For the world to see the greatness in us, we need to start living differently from the world or else we're going to be misbranded.
My main passage is Matthew 5 : 41 : If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two mile

A very simple verse with a powerful message. It's just not the verse alone though but the whole chapter. Jesus speaks to His disciples and pretty much gives them a new insight on how to truly live. Based on what the law says, He gives them a new definition on what it is to be a child of God. He rules out vengeance, vague promises, greed, lust and anything else that the disciples did not know was dulling the light of God in them. He speaks about loving others, in fact He not only speaks about it but redefines it : "You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven" [Matthew 5 : 43 - 45]. Suddenly, love got an upgrade and it was not just about loving those we want to love but loving everyone alike. Jesus also said : "If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" [Matthew 5 : 46 - 48]

I can imagine the shock His disciples must have felt as they must have heard Jesus speak because in this chapter, Jesus makes us understand that being a child of God is not about nearly doing what is expected of us or doing some of it or just about all of it, it's about doing it and still going the extra mile. So we used to love those people that we don't mind hanging around with well it's time we started loving the whole block, haters, lovers, enemies, whatever, the lot! So you used to pray for your crew, now it's time to start praying for those that did you wrong. So you used to sing in the choir on Sundays and then from Monday to Saturday you're acting like you don't even know how to spell Jesus, well you better start screaming Jesus. That's what being a child of God is. It's about going the extra mile. We are the light of the world [Matthew 5 : 14] but most of aren't shinning enough or at all. We are the ones that can make a difference & if we're not then it means the world is having a hard time identifying us to begin with.
Every single day, is filled with countless opportunities to go the extra mile; from your morning prayer, to your ride on the bus and even at work, school and at church!
Share the love, share your light!

God bless you

  1. Happy New Year! I haven't been in touch because of my grad classes, but it was really nice to check in today and read the word. Stay blessed!

    1. Happy New Year to you too sis! I pray all is well with you. Thanks for stopping by :)

  2. This post relates to something I had to do just yesterday. If we can go an extra mile for others, friends, families or neighbors, we should be able to do more for God. It's not always in what we do, but how we do it. Our heart matters.

For others to notice us as children of God, we must be different. The way we talk, dress, interact (etc) must bring glory to God. We must be willing to forsake the standard of the world and make God our daily standard.

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Yes Funmi. Yes. God bless you first and foremost. Secondaly, as Heather Lindsey says, God wants our hearts. Love is so much deeper than the world would have us see. God's love has depth, length, width and truth. World's love is surface level and deceiving. Carnally, it's difficult to love who don't love us but by His Spirit may we love fully, wholly, maturely, and truthfully.

    1. All the glory be to God sis.
It really does take the Spirit. Thanks for sharing sis!

Thank you for stopping by! It really means a lot! Why don't you tell me what you think, ask a question if you have any or just show some love by leaving a comment? I would love to hear from you!
