Letters Of Encouragement : Let Your Light Shine

Discouragement comes really easily in this "every man for himself" world and we easily throw our hands down in surrender. Not only does this hinder us from attaining our potentials & realizing our dreams but it also becomes a handicap when it comes to using the precious talents God has deposited in us

Firstly, what discourages us? What are the things that make us say "I can't/don't want to try anymore" or "I can't be bothered"? What makes us give in? It has always got to do with exterior influences. What people say, think, do, don't do, who's there, who doesn't care...And then there are circumstances that just seem to appear out of nowhere and slap the balance out of our life.

Secondly, what are the talents am I talking about? I'm talking about the talents God gave us, not just for our own satisfaction & recognition but ultimately for others. Jesus said, "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden" [Matthew 5 : 14]. Have you ever asked yourself what is that light? What does it represent? The light is something that has to come from us - God's children - & illuminate those around us. What does illuminate mean? It means brighten, better, improve, the life of those around us. Do you get my drift?

So this means, our life, is not just about us. Sorry, let me say that again, I know it you didn't catch it, YOUR life & MY life is not just for US. That is one vital fact many Christians fail to understand, digest or believe. Once you get that, your whole life changes meaning

What does that mean, that your life is not your own? Well, going back to our verse from Matthew 5 : 14...Jesus said WE [you and I] are the LIGHT [change, solution] of the world. In the verse just before, He said, "You are the salt of the earth". Are you following? Okay...so how can we live like the light? How can we let our lights shine? It's all about bringing out that thing God has placed in you, that thing you love to do, that thing you are passionate about, that thing only you know how to do best, and use it to bless others. Discouragement can come when you find there is so much to do or that you are the only one at work, but even if you have to do it alone, do it anyway.

Let me illustrate a bit...We are all, and I mean all, so busy with our everyday lives, working, studying, moving...just plain living our lives...But if we took the moment to take our heads out of whatever we are engrossed in like ostriches and actually looked around, we'd see there are so many people around us that need our light. A colleague might be going through hell in her marriage...she needs your prayer & encouragement. A brother/sister might be neck deep in depths...your encouragement & ideas are valuable. Your neighbor might be organizing an even but can't find that special talent they are looking for...you could be carrying that talent [AND MUCH MORE...] You don't have to - and GOD IS NOT asking us too contrary to popular belief - drop your life and totally turn to charity or missionary work before you can be the light of the world. The smallest of gestures can change lives. So next time you get discouraged about what you are going through and just feel like crawling into a whole, remember it's not just your life. Even on days - to be real, we all have them - you don't feel like smiling, dust off your worries & troubles and look around for someone & ways you can be a blessing to.

We can't live everyday in OUR LIVES just doing US & expect our light to impact anybody. Remember, even the decisions you make & the way you speak can be a blessing because you never know who is looking up to you. Another thing to note is, Jesus came in the flesh but the life He lived [not to talk of His death] was not about Him...His life was all about others. Just thinking about the colossal amount of compassion He had brings tears to my heart & makes my stomach churn...

Again, letting your light shine is as simple as making simple changes in the way you perceive others & relate to them. Letting your light shine does not mean you will be a celebrity & will be celebrated openly by all. Letting your light shine is not about expecting to be celebrated & congratulated for your all your talent or good work, instead, it's about reaching out even in the simplest of ways in a selfless way without expecting anything in return

Be encouraged. Next time you feel YOUR life is not going the way it should, put it in God's hand & look around for someone you can help brighten their life.
"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me" [Galatians 2 : 20]

God bless you
