Keeping The Moisture Levels Up #2

The moisture level of your hair is determined by how much moisture your hair has absorbed. To understand how your hair absorbs moisture, you'll have to understand a few things about hair science. I'll try to keep it as short & concise as possible.

The hair strands are made up of keratin, which is a type of protein and the outer most part of the hair shaft are made up of cuticles. The cuticles are like the shingles of a roof and they are the the hair shaft's mode of protection for the inner layers : the medulla & cortex

When the cuticles are closed, moisture cannot leave or enter the hair strands however, when they are raised, moisture can easily enter and also easily leave the hair strands. This leads me to say : for optimum moisture levels, the cuticles must be closed after moisturizing the hair to keep the moisture in there. So how are the cuticles closed?pH level is the answer to that. The best pH for the hair is acidic pH. Anything from 4.5-5.5 is great. There is no point in moisturizing the hair then letting the moisture out because your cuticles are open. Using a moisturizer & spritz with a pH ranging from 4.5-5.5 will not only moisturize the hair but seal the cuticles, thus keeping the moisture levels high.

However, keeping your hair's pH to the right level is not only the problem, it's also preserving your cuticles.

If your cuticles are damaged, no matter how perfect the pH of your is, your cuticles will not respond properly. Though the cuticles have multiple layers (up to 10) they are easily damaged. Damage can come from too much manipulation & wrongly manipulating the hair. Though the cuticle wears out over time due to manipulation & environmental factors it can be preserved by careful manipulation & cautious handing of the hair.

How do you take care of your hair's pH
