Soul Food : Going Over

"That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.”

Mark 4 : 35

This is our passage for this week.
We are all familiar with this portion of scripture. Jesus, wanting Him and His disciples to cross to the over side, told them to get into a boat.
As I read this passage a few weeks ago, I came to realize that, though we read this verse over and over again we don't really grasp the entirety of it and uncover the parallelism this verse has with our everyday life. The call to go to "the other side" is a call for all of us in life. "The other" side could be anything but where we presently are right now or where we have been. It is a call to proceed, move forward and cross over. It could be a business, a job, a relationship, a new project etc. It could be anything. The truth of the matter is that, God doesn't want us to be stagnant in life or just flow with it and he doesn't want us to dwell on one part of our life for too long. At the right time, God wants us to proceed at the right and at the right pace.

However, many are hesitant and unwilling to cross over, to take the next step forward because of many things : disappointments, obstacles and impediments. But dearest beloved, I have good news for you, though there will be storms that will want to beat you down and stop you from going over, Jesus is in it with you. The problem with many is that they think it will be a smooth sail. Jesus never told the disciples it would be a smooth sail but He told them they were going to the other side. It's the same thing with us. Though there will be storms and trials on the way, so long as Jesus is in it with us we are guaranteed to get there. He is in the journey with us, so why fret? Why worry? Why hesitate?
Even Jesus Himself asked His disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" [Mark 4 : 40]

When we choose to go to the other side and follow Jesus, storms are inevitable. These storms prepare us for what we are to see in the other side. Going through the storm and seeing Jesus calm it prepared the disciples for the other greater miracles Jesus was to perform. There faith, trust and understanding of Him clearly increased. Truthfully, storms will come but rest assured you will make it through because Jesus is right there with you no matter the circumstances, your fears, knowledge, emotions or what people are saying around you.

Whatever your "other side" is, trust God and take the step to go over. Don't look at the waters, waves and violence of the storms because they are just a passing experience. Rest and relax in the arms of Jesus, knowing He's got it all under control.

May God give us the grace to go over to the other side with complete trust in Jesus.
