Box Braids 101 : How I Wash My Box Braids

Blessings and love beauties!!

As I stated in this post [Box Braids 101 : Maintaining Box Braids], it is important to wash your box braids to avoid serious build up on the scalp and on the hair.

In this video, I talk about the method I employed to wash my box braids.

1. Section hair in 4 more or less equal parts

2. Let the water run through the braids

3. Shampoo the scalp and hair

4. Apply conditioner + wait

5. ACV + Tea rinse (optional)

6. Moisturizing braid spray

7. Apply leave-in conditioner

  1. This is great for me because I just got box braids put in. But I've been worried about what I would do about washing. I know that a clean scalp is a healthy one but I couldn't wrap my mind around washing my hair while in braids. But I was curious as to what you would recommend to moisturize the hair after washing as well as on a daily basis

    1. Hi Anon!
Glad the post is of help.
A great moisturizer would be a water based, moisturizing leave in conditioner that does not contain ingredients that will cause build up (for example, silicones). I'd advice using the leave in after washing and use a light braid spray or a simple water/glycerin/oil mix for daily moisturizing.

      Hope that helps :)

  2. I haven't had the most "careful" experience with my box braids and now know I'm WAY overdue for taking them out. Would washing my hair while it's still braided help the unbraiding process in any way? Or should I just extremely moisturize the braids while unbraiding and getting an intense washing/conditioning done afterwards?

    Thanks in advance :)

    1. Hi Anon!
I would advice you to omit washing and just bombard your braids with a moisturizing spray then take out as carefully as you can. You may need to detangle each braided section as you go along to avoid major tangles. To detangle, use a conditioner with a lot of slip. You can then go ahead to washing and deep conditioning.

      Hope that helps :)

  3. I already have a dry scalp and wash my hair once a week. Would getting braids be wise or do you think they would last? If they lasted a month id be happy

  4. Hi! I am planning to get box braids before a beach trip. How long before I leave should I get the braids so that they will have time to loosen up for washing? And if I swim everyday, is it okay to wash them that often? It is a week long trip.
