Soul Food : Come Near

"Come near to God and he will come near to you"

- James 4 : 8

This is our portion of scripture for this week.

This verse is quite explicit. It's as simple as that.

Many seek to know God more, to grow spiritually and attain new levels in their walk with God but they seem not to be able to. After frustration kicks in, many give up. According to James 4 : 8, for God to draw near to us, we have to take the first step. Therefore, if you are seeking for more of God, yet you are failing to read His word daily and engage in prayer with Him, then you are not really going about it right.

You see, God does not and will not force Himself on anyone. He gives us the choice to choose. It's up to you to choose and desire God. You must desire to grow closer to God, to know Him more. The truth of the matter is, the level you attain in your relationship with God is up to you. Many Christians complain about how they have been stagnant in their relationship and somewhat blame God but beloved, it's all up to us. It's the same thing with a relationship between two people. Whether it be friendship, courtship or marriage, for the relationship to grow, at least one of the two parties have to make an effort to get closer to the other person and if the other person is willing for the relationship to grow, that other person will respond with the same effort and the relationship will reach a new level.

It's the same thing with God and us. We have to take the first step and God assures us, He will respond. He is always there, ready to take you deeper, you just have to take the step.

Taking the step consists of :

- praying regularly : praying to God is a form of communicating with Him. No relationship can stand without communication. Even as you pray, you sharpen yourself spiritually and God ministers to you

- reading the Bible [God's word] daily : God's word is His will. To grow closer to God, you need to know His will. When you are in a relationship, do you prefer to do the things your partner hates or loves? Of course you will do the latter because that's what is going to promote the relationship.

- practicing what you read from His word : There is no gain in just reading the word of God without doing it. This is a definite relationship breaker as stated in the previous point. "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says" James 1 : 22

- obeying Him [which is also submitting to Him] : You cannot come to God without fully submitting to Him and expect your relationship to grow. In the same manner, you cannot come to Him half believing in Him. How is that relationship going to work? When we step into a relationship, don't we fully believe it will work...this is truly the driving force at first, if not, both parties would not want to waste their energy on something they do not believe would work. It's the same thing with God. To show you fully believe in God, submit and obey His word. There is therefore an element of faith involved. Before coming to God, you must have faith! Without faith, you cannot reach God"Anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him" Hebrews 11 : 6

God is ready to take you higher in your relationship with Him, but you have to take the first step. Your will or desire (which becomes His will), faith and submission are three very important requisites. After taking the step, you need to stay grafted and rooted and not go back. For this, you will need more faith and "faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ" Romans 10 : 17. That means, you need to read God's word fervently, passionately and CONSISTENTLY. His word also fortifies you against the wiles of the devil who will try to make you backslide. You will also need prayers to stand and persevere.

May God help us to desire more of Him and come closer to Him so that he might draw closer to us.
Amen!!
