Soul Food : Be Alert

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people."

- Ephesians 6 : 18

This is our scripture for this week.

The message of this verse is quite clear. Brother Paul was telling the brothers and sisters of the church in Ephesus to pray in the spirit at all times...Basically, what he was trying to tell them was to always  be vigilant
It's clear that our level of vigilance can be measured through our prayers.

But firstly, let us try and understand this verse thoroughly, let us try and understand what "pray in the Spirit on all occasions" means. This part of the verse means that we are to pray everywhere at anytime. We are not to wait for when we can get into our rooms, shut the door and get on your knees. We are to pray whether in the bus, on the job, at dinner...Being led by the spirit, we are to pray at all instances. It is the spirit that will lead us into prayer therefore, this means we have to be sprit-filled. It is by divine guidance that we will know what to pray for and when.
Secondly, "with all kinds of prayers and requests" means we are to pray about anything and everything. There is not such thing as "issues that are not worth praying about" or "less important prayer requests", God wants us to bring it all before Him, according to the leading of the spirit.
Thirdly, "be alert" means be ready for any of the devil's tricks. As Christians, we should not be taken unawares by anything. To be ready for temptations, trials, persecution we have to be close to God, make His word central in our lives and put on the whole armor of God ("Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." Ephesians 6 : 13)
And lastly, " for all the Lord’s people" tells us we have to keep praying for our brothers and sisters in the Lord. We are our brothers' and sisters' keepers. We are to intercede and stand in the gap for one ["Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." James 6 : 15

Now, the question is, why do we need to be vigilant, alert or keep watch? What are we preparing for or watching against? All seems to be well so be alert? The truth of the matter is "Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."(1 Peter 5 : 8). If you read that verse from the beginning, you will see it starts with the same issue we are talking about, "Be alert and of sober mind".

We need to be sober and not drunk with the pleasures and nonsense of this world. We are to be awake, alert and sober, just like soldier keeping watch. That's what we are to do. The devil goes about, without rest, always on the look out for whom devour, so why should we sit comfortably and be idle? We should in no case be ignorant of his devices (2 Corinthians 2 : 11) because "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy" (John 10 : 10). The devil is surely the thief and we should be prepared.

Remember,"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." (Matthew 26 : 41). Our flesh will surely want to relax, be comfortable and enjoy the wicked pleasures of this world, that is why we are not to tune in to the body, rather we are to operate in the spirit at all times. Watching is synonym to not being ignorant of the things going on around us, instead, we are to interpret them through the leading of the spirit.

The only way we can prepare is to pray fervently, read God's word so we will know the truth and not be deceived, do what His word says and listen to the spirit.
If Jesus prayed so much, how much more us? [Luke 6 : 12; Matthew 14 : 23]

May God give us the grace to stay alert.

  1. Thanks Funbi for posting this! My pastor preached on being alert a couple of weeks ago. It's also funny that you mentioned that there are no things that are too small to pray about... I actually had that conversation with a co-worker... Great post!
