Soul Food : Ready For Service

"Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the LORD, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice"

- 2 Chronicles 20 : 19

This is our portion of scripture for this week.

The verse is found in the accounts of king Jehoshaphat's reign. King Jehoshaphat was the second ever other King of Judah that really pleased God after Israel separated itself from Rehoboam, his great-grandfather. In this context, the King called upon God with all Judah after the Moabites and their allies marched up against them in war. Instead of crying, stressing, turning to his allies, the first and only thing he did was call on God and this itself is a lesson to be learnt alone.

Now after calling on God, the spirit of God fell on Asaph and God spoke through him, telling King Jehoshaphat and all of Judah that He would fight the battle for them.

King Jehoshaphat bowed down and worshiped God and "Then some Levites from the Kohathites and Korahites stood up and praised the LORD, the God of Israel, with a very loud voice".

When I first read this, I was astonished!

If you are not aware, the Kohathites were the "choir" of the people of Israel. In this particular setting, nobody asked them to sing, nobody had to encourage them and beg them to do what they had been assigned to do, but instead, they "stood up and praised the Lord, the God of Isreal, with a very loud voice."

Now there are two things to hold on to here :

● There were only some of them. It didn't say they all stood up but it said some. It's the same thing in the house of God today, it always seems like only some people are ready to stand up to do God's work without having to be begged by the head of ministry or having to be asked by the pastors. This should not be our attitude. We should be ever ready to do our work as ministers, no matter what it is, no matter how small or how big you consider it, we all have an equal responsibility to serve

● The verse says they "praised the Lord with a very loud voice". So now, it says they were only some of them but yet, they still able to praise God with a very loud voice. This tells us two things :

- Those that are ready to work, ready for service in the house of God / His kingdom are always those that are willing to do it with all their might and all their heart. Though the Levites who stood up to sing might have been few, yet, they were able to praise God with all their might and give up a really loud praise.

- God will always use those that are available. No matter how little the number of those willing to serve are, God will still be able to use them. God is not moved by number, in fact, he proved this to Gideon (Judges 7).

If you are a worker in the house of God, my word to you today is not to be discouraged by no matter what your church might be going through or what you might be going through. The other Levites that did not get up to sing might have been discouraged because of the Moabites and others that were to attack them and because of that, they could not perform their God given function.
The truth of the matter is, we are all laborers in God's vineyard (Matthew 20 : 1 -16), no matter what you are doing, or I'm doing, and we will all get a just reward according to our work. So whatever you are doing, keep on doing for the sole glory of our Lord, God.

Let us stand and be ready for service, faithfully doing what Christ has called us to do in His kingdom and obediently using our gifts for his work (Matthew 25 : 14 - 30).

May God help us.
