Soul Food : Be The Best

showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand..."

- Daniel 1 : 4

This is our portion of scripture for this week.

We all know the story of Daniel. Daniel was an Hebrew boy who had been exiled along with the other Hebrews and while young men were chosen to serve at the King's palace, he was chosen.
Please note that these young men were not serving or cleaning, no but rather, they "The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service." (Daniel 1 : 6). They were sort of like apprentices that were to be trained for service in the palace, that is, in assisting with the governing of the people.

So why was Daniel chosen?
Well as verse 4 said, since they were looking for young men showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand..." he was chosen.

But guess, what, Daniel was not only one of the best, but he later became the VERY best as Daniel 6 : 3 says "Now Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom"

Yes, if you read through the whole book of Daniel, you will see that Daniel was nothing less than THE BEST in all he did. From serving in the palace, to translating dreams to becoming a governor himself.

So, how did Daniel become the top of the very top? How did he manage to become the best?
The answer is simple. He did what every Christian should do to assure success in all they do.

This is the only recipe to be the very best, learn it from Daniel himself :

Daniel stood up for what he believed in. He dared to be different, different for God. "But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way." (Daniel 1 : 8). Daniel could have easily eaten off the King's table like the other young men but he refused. He did not want to compromise himself for a positon. In fact, he wasn't seeking one, but all he sough to do was to please his God. He did not lower his standards one bit, ever, even after he started finding favor with the king as Daniel 6 : 4 says, "They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent".
And as he continued to put his God before anything else, even standing up to him in the face of death (Daniel 6 : 16) he prospered, and grew in knowledge and found uncommon favor even in the eyes of the king.

Is that our attitudes these days? Are we willing to set ourselves apart from the junk of this world? Are we ready to tell our bosses we believe in God and we cannot do this or that? Are we willing to let our friends know we pray to God and that we cannot involve ourselves in the filthy things of this world?
Daniel not only served God with all his heart and put him first no matter what, but he also did it openly, he wanted the world to know, even when the King decreed it was illegal (Daniel 6 : 10).

Is that our attitude these days?

But listen, follow the life of Daniel and you will realize that this is the only way, the only recipe to excel in all we do, from our studies, to our carrier, to our ministries and in our families.

But wait, not only was Daniel the most highly ranked amongst his mates and all those around him, but God revealed revelations to him. Amazing right? (Daniel 8, 10, 11, 12)

Daniel was no prophet or priest, yet got revealed to him great revelations! In fact, Daniel had revelations of the end times, he was revealed some of the most greatest visions in the Bible.

So brothers and sisters, the only way to be the very BEST is to be :

1. God first : Daniel was not seeking a position, but rather, he  sough his God. God was the very first thing in his life, no matter what.

2. Knowledge of God : Daniel knew the God he served, even when the king said he was going to throw them in the furnace Daniel said : "“King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter.  If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” (Daniel 3 : 16 -18). Daniel Knew in the God whom he served. He never succumbed under pressure and he knew God was a faithful God. Daniel knew God and tapped into all his promises and thus benefited from them.

3. Humility : As Daniel climbed to the top, he never once became proud and said it was all down to him and his high ranking never stopped him from serving God like he used to, instead, he grew in his knowledge of God and drew closer to him, up to the point where God revealed powerful visions to him.

To put God first, we need to have His love in us and desire Him and seek Him...We need faith and "faith comes by hearing and hearing through the word of Christ" (Romans 10 : 17)Putting God first means communing with Him, obeying His word and walking according to His will. We need to be able to put God first in this present world to be able to be the best.

For the knowledge of God, we need His word. Simple. We need to know His promises, His will, His commandments

Humility is sticking to God. It's not glorying in the flesh or seeking to have our ways or whatever. Daniel never once applied to be the head of the princes of the provinces, or a governor...no...he continued to serve his God and all was given him.

Remember the verse "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6 : 33).

This exactly what we need to apply in this world. Yes work hard to succeed at your job, your studies, in your family...but in all things, do it like Daniel. Put God first and let Him take you and watch Him carry you to the very top! I can imagine Daniel, starting out at his training just wanted to pass it, but God saw his faithfulness, his service to him, his desire to seek him and also his focus on his earthly duties and God took him beyond his imaginations.
If you are studying, please stay focused yet give it to God has you put Him first in your life, if you are working, especially in a very competitive environment, stay focused yet put God first and apply God's word in all you do, do not cut corners or seek to make your colleagues look bad...
Whatever you are doing on this earth, whatever God has put in your hands, seek to do it well and seek to be the best!!

Never forget this : "I can do all this through him who gives me strength" (Philippians 4 : 13).

Daniel's story has been a blessing to me this week, especially when God opened my eyes to the points I am sharing with you!

May God help us be the best in all we do, even as we put Him first!!
