Back 2 Basics : Wash Day

source

Wash day for us naturals can be a long, tiring day and I'm speaking from experience.

The best way to benefit from a wash day while cutting down on the time spent is by sticking to the basics.

First of all, it is up to you to decide what you want to get from your wash day and this depends on your hair regimen (to draw up a hair regimen, please check here).

Once you've decided that, then it's time for you to pick what exactly you should spend your time on doing to your hair.

Here is a list of things you can do to your hair on wash day and examples of ways of achieving them :

Cleansing : This is our main goal on most wash days. There are a number of ways to cleanse the hair depending on what level of cleansing you want and your regimen. From Shampoos to clays.
Examples : Clarifying shampoos, Sulfate free shampoos, black soap, rhassoul clay

Conditioning : A must during any wash day! It is important to treat our thirsty strands with moisture during wash day, especially after cleansing, so as to restore any lost moisture.
Examples : Deep conditioning with natural raw ingredients, conditioning with a store bought conditioner, adding some natural raw ingredients (like olive oil) to a store bought conditioner for a greater conditioning effect

Detangling : Detangling can be achieved in a number of ways, the most important things is to pick the method that best suits your hair needs, time and hair regimen.
Examples : Detangling using a wide tooth comb, detangling using a denman brush, finger detangling, a ACV rinse prior to detangling

Strengthening : It is important to use products that strengthen the strands to prevent any breakage. Since our hair strands are made up of protein, a protein treatment is a great way to strengthen the hair. Depending on how much protein you need, some protein treatments are better than others.
Examples : Egg and mayo protein treatment, Black molasses protein treatment, Aphogee two step protein treatment

Styling : After washing, styling is next and depending on the style you want to achieve, you will want to apply one or two products to your hair. This also helps keep in the moisture that your hair has just gained from the conditioning.
Examples : A leave in conditioner, some oils or butters to seal, a moisturizing spritz, gel

As you can see, a basic wash day can be achieved simply by sticking to what you really need and choosing what will have the best effect on your hair depending on your hair needs and hair regimen.
This is a great way to save on time, products and gain as much as you can from your wash day.

How would you describe your wash days? Do you try to stick to the basics?

  1. I definitely dont do all of those things every time I have a wash day (my hair doesn't like shampoo or too much protein) but I do think that is a good breakdown! Lol you should do the 30 day challenge too, I'm enjoying it so far.
