Twists Tutorials Series #1 : Getting The Style

When I first began styling my own hair, that is twisting and co. I always felt so excited whenever I thought about styling my hair but whenever the time came, most of the time, I found myself pondering which style I should wear and playing around with my hair to see what I could do.

Getting a style is the number one step to the process of twisting your hair (or styling it in whatever way you desire for that matter).

First of all, to get a style, you have to decide what you want. You have to decide whether you want flat-twists or two strand twists, or maybe you want to do both.
Secondly, you can decide what kind of look you would like. Do you want an updo style, a loose style or a funky look? It's all up to you.
The third step is about finding the look for you! This comes after you have listed down exactly what you want and the look you would like to achieve. Finding a look depends on your taste and even more importantly, the shape of your face. Even though so many women are not aware of this, it's a fact : not every woman can rock every look! It really just depends on the unique way God made your face. Now it's normally not hard to find a look that you like, after you've made up your mind on exactly what kind of look you want.

Here are a few tips to how to get a style :

Firstly, on how to decide the style you want :

Decide how long you would want to wear the style, whether it be for a few days to up to a week or two, it's up to you. But you have to know that not every style can last so long. If you are thinking of wearing the twists and co. for just a few days, you can wear large flat twists or if you want to keep your hair in a low maintenance style for a week or two, then try small two strand twists. If you do not mind how long a style can last then it's up to you to just decide on two strand twists, flat twists or both.

Secondly, on deciding what kind of look you want :

Now this depends on what you do for a living and the kind of life you live. For example, if you are a student during exam period, you might want a funky style with flat twists; or if you are a busy executive you might want a style that you can easily put in an updo etc. It's really up to you and what your life is like.

Thirdly, on finding the look for you :

To do this, you can simply browse the internet and look through pictures of women rocking twists and co. styles. It won't take long before you find the one that would look great on you or if you like to be creative you could be inspired by looking at other naturals. There are loads of natural hair blogs and tumblr accounts with great styles and here is a wonderful blog that archives natural hair styles.

Things you should try and avoid :

- Do not try and play in your hair around with different styles before actually deciding on the one you want because one, this is time consuming, two, tiring and frustrating and most importantly can cause unnecessary breakage!

- Do not take too long trying to decide or else you'll get tired and confused and end up at square one (and the same time get discouraged)!

- Do not decide on doing a style that you partly only comprehend how it was done or else this will cost you time later one

To get a style, you can start from anyone of these points until you've worked through all of them; there is no strict order!

Well, that's it on Getting the style, now you are ready for the next step!

If you have any suggestions or experience, please share!

Stay blessed and funky!
