Natural Hair ABCs : Every Newly/Aspiring Natural's Checklist

source

So you are going natural? You are set on it? Your mind is made up? Or are you already a natural diva who is still finding her way? Well whatever the case, here is a list I have put together according to my experience that I believe should be every newly or aspiring natural's checklist to going natural :

1.
Is this really what you want? This is the number one thing any aspiring natural or any newly natural needs to be sure of. Don't say being natural is what I want because others are doing it. Find out if you really want to embrace your kink, coily God-given hair and if you are ready for the changes to come.

2. Decide how you are going to start your natural hair journey (if you are going to transition or big chop) : Before choosing to cut off all the hair on your head or let some hair grow out first, please give yourself time to weigh the pros and cons of each. Try to decide which one will work best for your hair and fit in best with your lifestyle.

3. Who is around to help? This is a very important point : support. If you just went natural or you are thinking of going natural and your loved ones are supportive, that's great! It will be of great use. But if you find you do not have such support, well, again, ask yourself the first question again and if the answer is still yes then brace yourself, encourage yourself in the Lord and take up your journey knowing why you are on it and what your goals are.

4. Do you know your hair? You must be sure of this. Do you know your hair? Well at this point, no but this is the time to get to know your hair. It's not the time to start trying to put off caring for your hair at every time. Try playing around with some products, and routines to see what works and what doesn't. This is also the time to draw up a hair regimen, even if you are transitioning or want to put your hair in protective styles 90% of the time, you still need a hair routine even if it's just a simple one.

5. Arm yourself : Being natural calls for knowledge. Inform yourself on what to do to your hair, when, how, which techniques to use, how to style your hair etc. There are numerous blogs on natural hair, Youtube channels dedicated to teaching and learning everything about natural hair etc. Do some research and stay informed. Knowledge is power.

6. Personalize your journey : This is your natural hair journey, not anybody else's. It's good to learn from other divas' experiences with their hair but whatever is not relevant to your hair's nature or hair routine should not even be considered. Try new things and stick to what works. Avoid jumping on every single bandwagon. This is just a waste of time, energy and money. Once you've got what works stick to it!

7. Enjoy : There is no point in being natural and not finding any enjoyment from it. The truth is being natural is a very exciting journey and it is fun to try new hair dos and styles. Do not hesitate to have fun with your hair your way!

That's it!

Please keep in my that this is a general checklist! Every natural journey is unique!

If you have any more additions or suggestions, please share!

Stay blessed and funky sisters!
